How Our Rock Candy is Made

Every piece of rock candy at The Red Balloon begins with a simple kind of magic.

It starts with a carefully balanced blend of sugar, glucose and water, gently heated and brought to just the right temperature. From there, the molten mixture is poured onto our cooling table where colour and flavour are blended in by hand to create our signature look and taste.

As it begins to set, our artisans work the candy on a warm surface, stretching, rolling and folding it again and again until the design runs perfectly through every piece. This is where the character of each batch truly comes to life.

Finally, the candy is hand-cut into individual pieces, each one holding the same colour and flavour from edge to edge.

It’s a craft we’ve been perfecting in Melbourne for over 20 years and it’s one that simply cannot be rushed.
